The highly influential American opera classic
A concert version of the great American opera
A concert version of the great American opera
Greenville Symphony Orchestra celebrates its season finale with a wonderful concert version of the Gershwin classic Porgy and Bess. First performed in 1935, the opera is now seen as a particular landmark of American theater and is often referred to as the composer's masterpiece. Aiming to create a folk opera, lyricist Ira Gershwin - brother of George - took his inspiration from the spiritual and folk styles emanating from South Carolina at the time, and used these to frame a story of fraught tensions, love and the search for redemption.
Seasoned vocalists Deandre Simmons and Laquita Mitchell perform the parts of Porgy and Bess respectively, and with beloved pieces including 'Summertime', 'I Got Plenty of Nothing' and 'It Ain't Necessarily So', don't miss out on this classic of American opera!
